About Us

Duquesne University’s School of Pharmacy opened in 1925 with an enrollment of just 50 students in a few rooms of Canevin Hall. Today, the School of Pharmacy enrolls more than 1,000 students in its six-year Pharm.D. program, nearly 130 in its weekend program, 10 post-Pharm.D. fellows and residents, and 65 M.S. and Ph.D. students. Nearly 100 percent of Duquesne student pharmacists have gained immediate placement in employment and advanced studies for more than two decades and have been given preferred status by pharmacy employers.

The School’s facilities now include Bayer Learning Hall (including a state-of-the-art facilities that promote active learning), an entire floor of Richard King Mellon Hall, and a modern pharmaceutical technology and management laboratory.

The School ranks 48th among all American pharmacy schools in the 2012 U.S. News and World Report “Best Graduate Programs” listing, and its faculty ranks third in the nation among private pharmacy schools for securing research funding from the National Institutes of Health.

Other notable recent developments and recognitions include:

Dr. Aleem Gangjee, Distinguished Professor, Medicinal Chemistry and the Rev. Adrian Van Kaam, C.S.Sp. Endowed Chair in Scholarly Excellence is the recipient of five concurrent multi-million dollar NIH-funded research grants resulting in new cancer killing drug discoveries.

The Center for Pharmacy Care, located in the Duquesne Union, offers pharmacist-directed wellness and chronic disease management services to local residents and University employees.

The School’s Academic Partners affiliation with the Catholic Charities Free Health Care Center earned the 2010 Pride in Pittsburgh Award from the Allegheny County Medical Society.

Recent global pharmacy education initiatives include an affiliation agreement with the University of Perugia, Italy’s most prestigious pharmacy school, as well as other schools of pharmacy in China, Japan and Africa.

The School has been nationally recognized for providing continuing professional education to FDA personnel, pharmaceutical companies, and dentists and dental assistants.
